Abbot's Hill School is an independent day school for girls aged 11-16 years in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
Pupils at Abbot's Hill School are members of houses, known as ‘Clans’. The previous incentive system did not allow the pupils to take full responsibility for their Clan points. The school wanted pupils to be able to register and keep track of their Clan points to encourage independence.
Denise Walker, Assistant Head Senior, said, “Pupils engagement and responsibility has improved since introducing the Carrot Rewards system. Pupils enjoy receiving the stickers, and take a great deal of delighted in logging them online, often being very competitive.
“We use it with Years 7-11. There are rewards for individual students including a Bronze Award when they log 20 awards, Silver Award for 50, and Gold for 100. We also have school wide rewards where a prize is given the best form every half term, and also to whichever students logs the 1000th, 2000th etc. We have just had a student log the 11000th reward this school year.
“There is also a house points system in the school called the ‘Clan Cup’. All rewards given count towards not only the individual, their form, and their year scores, but also the score of their ‘Clan’. We have found that this really encourages pupils to want to earn and log their rewards, as it counts to more than just their individual success.
“One of the activities that also really works it the random prize draws. These ensure that even those pupils that are unlikely to get the most rewards, also have a chance of winning, and helps keep them engaged.
“A key part of its success has been the support from the Carrot Rewards team. They have been brilliant. They helped with the original set up, and each year help me to set up our many competitions and milestones. It would be easy to do myself, but as with all teachers I have very limited time, and it is reassuring to know that it is all set up and ready for us to use.”
