KS4 Geography lesson on shanty towns
The Lesson begins with a thought-provoking starter, providing an opportunity for the teacher’s subject knowledge and enthusiasm to inspire learners, as well as create a positive learning climate. The teacher has high expectations of all pupils and uses a number of imaginative teaching strategies that allow opportunities for team work, group discussion and independent thinking.
Pupils will be able to understand how to improve and are supported. Great use of resources, which make a marked contribution to the quality of learning and the activities are interesting, motivating and imaginative. A fantastic homework task is set which encourages independent thinking and development.
Scaffolding of tasks and teacher modelling contributes to understanding and effective participation. .

KS4 English lesson on persuasive writing
This lesson is outstanding because the teacher uses excellent subject knowledge to inspire, enthuse and challenge all pupils. The teacher uses fun and imaginative teaching strategies that create a positive atmosphere for learning and also encourage and foster independent thinking and group interaction. The class is effectively assessed throughout the lesson with the various focused activities and the results of these tasks.
The use of resources is excellent and makes a large contribution to the quality of learning. The lesson is well differentiated and all learning styles are considered. The plenary/summary task is inspired: if you can present a good argument against homework, there will be none. This is an outstanding way of getting pupils to assess themselves and show excellent progress and self-regulating responses.
This kind of lesson will inspire pupils’ keenness to do well, apply themselves and practice their independent thinking skills.

KS4 PSHE lesson on malnutrition and Unicef
The teacher authoritatively imparts subject knowledge and uses a range of teaching strategies that enable learners to deepen their understanding of the subject as well as practise independent skills. Using a good range of resources, the teacher encourages pupils to think independently, in pairs and to work together in groups, enabling them to take part in peer assessment and general team work.
The teacher uses questioning to support and promote learning and checks consistently that the pupils are learning, understanding and making progress. Using imaginative strategies to keep the class engaged and inspired, creates a positive climate for learning and increases awareness of the issue in question.
This lesson would have been outstanding had it been clearly differentiated in the lesson plan to show how it can be adapted to suit all learning abilities.
Clear differentiation would improve this lesson as well as evidence of appropriate homework being set.

KS4 History lesson on suffragettes
The teacher uses imaginative teaching strategies and a good range of resources to support learning in this lesson. The teacher has high expectations of all pupils; the main task and learning outcomes are clearly differentiated to ensure pupils make good progress.
Well-judged questioning develops an understanding of the subject and encourages independent thinking. The teacher also effectively ensures that pupils remain engaged.
This lesson could have been outstanding if there had been clear evidence of the teacher creating a positive climate for learning and evidence that the learning is enjoyable to pupils as well as challenging.
The teacher fails to systematically check pupils’ understanding throughout the lesson through effective assessment methods.

KS4 D&T lesson on bicycles (use lesson 1)
The teacher makes good use of audio visual resources to enhance pupils’ learning as well as employing a number of teaching styles to support the lesson. Planned differentiation meets the pupils’ learning needs well. The teacher also checks pupils’ understanding effectively with a plenary to conclude each task as well as class discussion (Q&A) to assess progress. Challenging homework is set, offering the class a good opportunity for independent learning.
This lesson would have been outstanding if there had been evidence of an effective use of TAs in the classroom and a clearer extension opportunity for gifted learners.
No use of TAs as a resource. Class discussions run the risk of being disruptive without proper classroom management and a more focused activity.
