Year 8 PE lesson on invasion games

The teacher has high expectations of their pupils and each section of the lesson has clear targets and objectives that are obtainable and differentiated. They also use a wide range of teaching skills to suit all learning styles and ensure that pupils are assessed throughout the lesson to monitor their progress.

Each activity is thoroughly explained and expectations are laid out in a clear and concise way that enables all students to understand. A good range of resources are used to support learning and time is used effectively throughout. The lesson plan offers a clear evaluation criteria as well as excellent assessment of prior knowledge.

Good opportunities for team work and the teacher assesses learning and progress regularly and accurately.

Apart from the danger of there being too much detail in this lesson plan, there is little room for improvement.

This lesson is well structured, well planned and offers all pupils the opportunity to build on their learning. Each section of the lesson is well defined and differentiated to cover all learning styles and abilities.

The starter is engaging and focused and gives pupils the chance to think independently as well as share their ideas with the rest of the class. The teacher uses a great range of resources to support learning, some of which are interactive and encourage good contributions from the class, in teams, pairs and independently. The plenary is focused and brings the students back to their objectives and concludes the lesson very well. Excellent extensions are provided and homework is also set. Year 7 Maths lesson on logic puzzles

The teacher has high expectations of pupils and also authoritatively imparts good subject knowledge to engage pupils. This lesson is planned in a way that first assesses prior knowledge, introduces a new topic effectively and deepens pupils’ knowledge of this topic.

Each activity is designed to further their learning and understanding, whilst building on revised prior knowledge. The teacher uses a range of teaching styles and activities during the lesson, offering opportunities for independent learning, team/pair work and peer assessment. Homework is also set.

This lesson would be outstanding if more evidence that learning is enjoyable and rewarding was given, even when tasks are challenging. Also, if the lesson was differentiated to ensure exceptional progress was being made by all pupils.

There are no learning objectives laid out for this lesson. Differentiation is not documented, aside from ‘teacher works with slower pupils’.

Year 7 Science lesson on chemical reactions (Unit 7F)

The title of this lesson is likely to capture the attention of the class and the main practical activity will keep them actively engaged in the lesson. The teacher can create a positive climate for learning in this lesson by allowing pupils to discover things for themselves and record what they learn.

A range of resources and teaching styles are used to support the lesson and the teacher refers back to the learning objectives throughout the lesson, enabling them to assess whether or not they are being met.

This lesson would be outstanding if it had contained a focused starter and plenary as well as clear differentiation for all levels to ensure that exceptional progress was being made by all pupils.

The lesson plan does not include a starter or an extension. The lesson does not appear to be clearly differentiated and there is no homework set.

Year 9 Geography lesson introducing development

This lesson is planned to deepen pupils’ knowledge of the subject matter (varying wealth in different parts of the world) as well as to develop skills. The aims, objectives and skills are clearly laid out in this lesson plan, as is the differentiation. Resources are used to support teaching and pupils are able to use these resources (worksheets) to reach the learning objectives. The teacher assesses the class throughout the lesson and finishes with a plenary that brings the class back to the aim of the lesson and allows them to check if they’ve attained the objectives.

This lesson would be outstanding if there was evidence of targeted support given by TAs and other resources.

There is no pair work, team work or peer assessment, which are good for these kinds of activities. No homework is set.
